When I was 14 I injured my back, I experienced chronic pain for 2 ½ years that was beyond what I thought I could ever endure. The western medicine world was unable to cure my pain and it was not until I read a book about the mind-body connection that my pain was cured. If I had not read this book I would probably still be in pain to this day, however, I have lived pain-free for 11 years and I teach advanced yoga students without experiencing the slightest amount of pain. If you experience chronic back pain, I strongly urge you to read the book that saved my life. Without prior knowledge to the way the brain interacts with the body, I had no idea that the brain can actually translate subconscious emotions into physical pain.
Dr. John E. Sarno is the author of the book I read titled, Healing Back Pain: The Mind Body Connection. Dr. Sarno was a professor at New York University Medical Center and teaches a non-invasive therapy has been effective for over ten-thousand individuals including Howard Stern and an employee of Rosie O’Donnell who was wheelchair bound. Dr. Sarno discovered what he calls tension mitosis syndrome (TMS). His book helps people understand how the brain subconsciously translates repressed fear, anger, and anxiety into physical pain. The person experiencing the pain has no way of knowing that this is happening and thinks they have an injury. Often times the pain manifests in a point of weakness in the body which can prolong an injury as it did in my case.
I was a performing acrobat and my symptoms began with shooting pain in my lower back and I had numbness in my arm and hand. I went through physical therapy, tried cranial sacral therapy, acupuncture, minimally invasive surgery, muscle relaxants, cartilage building supplements, you name it, I tried it, all to no avail. I was even diagnosed with herniated disks and treated for limes disease. Everything seemed to make my chronic pain worse. At the end of two years, I went to John’s Hopkins medical center with a huge stack of medical records and they put their hands up. They had no idea what was causing my pain and gave me the grim news that I would probably have to live with the pain, not be able to bear children, or do even the most simple tasks such as laundry. I was mortified and sentenced to live in pain. You can imagine how hopeless I felt. Not long after that I read the book and after applying the simple affirmations that the book teaches that recognizes the pain as repressed emotions, I never again experienced the pain. During the initial process when I felt the pain, I followed his technique and the pain would immediately dissipate.
TMS is common in type A personalities and perfectionists. People who try not to show weakness and are non-confrontational often develop TMS.
